Understanding the link between household mess and stress
A study published in the Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin journal reveals that women living in cluttered and disorganized households experience higher levels of the stress hormone cortisol and increased symptoms of depression. The findings suggest that the state of our living spaces can have a significant impact on our mental health and well-being. The researchers indicate that this effect is due to the way our brains process our surroundings. A cluttered environment can therefore overwhelm our senses, leading to feelings of anxiety and stress.
