While the idea of insects on fruit might seem off-putting, they are a natural and harmless part of growing strawberries according to experts. Strawberries occasionally attract small insects like aphids and spider mites, which are drawn to their nectar. Temesgen et al. (2021) highlights the importance of proper washing techniques in reducing the risk of foodborne illnesses linked to parasite transmission through berries. The findings suggest that a simple rinse under cold tap water for one minute can significantly reduce the presence of these insects, minimizing health risks linked to contaminated berries.
