U.S. Surgeon General advocates for warning labels on social media
The U.S. Surgeon General has recently advocated for the placement of warning labels on social media platforms, citing concerns over links between social media use and children’s mental health risks. According to a 2019 study published in the journal JAMA Psychiatry, adolescents who spend more than three hours daily on social media are at increased risk for depression, anxiety, and other stress-related disorders. The Surgeon General emphasizes that similar to tobacco and alcohol products, it is crucial to inform users about the potential risks associated with social media, to promote healthier engagement with digital environments among youth.
