A study published in JAMA Network Open has revealed that consuming high amounts of ultra-processed foods, especially artificial sweeteners, may increase the risk of developing depression. Characterized by their low nutritional value, high levels of sugar, fat, and additives, ultra-processed foods like packaged snacks and frozen meals are believed to adversely affect mental health. The research findings also note the potential role of the gut microbiome in this relationship, which may play a part in triggering depressive symptoms.
