A new study published in the journal BMJ Medicine suggests that the regular use of fish oil supplements may increase the risk of stroke or heart issues in people without cardiovascular disease, but could reduce the likelihood of heart attack for those with existing heart conditions. The study, which analyzed the data of over 415,000 adults in the UK Biobank, found that fish oil only helped individuals already diagnosed with heart disease. Health experts recommend not replacing fish oil supplements for a balanced diet, instead advising the consumption of omega-3 fatty acids from food sources to support overall health and wellbeing. If supplements are needed, experts recommend opting for prescription omega-3 fatty acids instead of over-the counter options, as they are generally more pure and of higher quality.
