New research published in the journal JAMA Ophthalmology has raised concerns about a potential link between semaglutide, the active ingredient in weight loss and diabetes drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy, and a rare eye condition that causes sudden blindness. While the study highlights a possible link, experts caution that more research is needed to determine whether semaglutide plays a direct role in triggering this condition. In the meantime, people considering or currently using semaglutide are encouraged to weigh the potential risks and benefits in consultation with their healthcare provider.
