In a new study published in JAMA Neurology, the researchers found that some dementia patients had an unexpected surge in artistic skills and interests. The researchers suggested that if certain neural pathways deteriorate due to the disease, alternative networks may become activated, possibly enhancing different cognitive abilities such as creativity. Neuroimaging has shown shifts in brain activity that align with increased artistic output. These findings offer new methods for therapeutic engagement, improving the quality of life of dementia patients and their families.
